Jewelry Definition: Laser Sizing / Laser Welding
Laser welding is accomplished by directing a tiny laser beam at the piece of jewelry you wish to alter or repair. Much less heat is generated in this process. Thanks to this new technology it’s possible to make repairs on jewelry with heat-sensitive gemstones like emeralds and opals that were difficult to impossible without removing the sensitive gemstones in the past.
Traditional jewelry soldering is done by applying a hot, open flame to the area of the piece needing work. Because gold is such a good conductor, the heat from the soldering can be transferred to heat-sensitive gemstones causing them to crack or change color.
