Dreamy

Why is Fire Agate so fascinating?

Its earthy iridescence glowing gorgeously and mysteriously is what gets this Santa Barbara custom designer’s inspiration going. Today I’m sharing a couple of projects I’ve done with fire agate.

What is Fire Agate?

Fire agate is in the chalcedony family, pronounced (Cal SED ‘ny). It’s made up of layered quartz and impurities like reddish and brown hematite that gives it internal iridescence.

It’s transformed in the fire of lava or high heat, pressure and millions of years’ worth of earth’s crust movement.

What’s the Best Way to Set It?

I recommend that you use it in pendants and earrings, because quartz is softer that other gems.

I prefer the bezel style of setting to reveal it’s beauty and iridescence.

It was really fun to find pearls to go with Cynthia’s centerpiece of Fire Agate. Her necklace looks great on her and people always need a second look at the amazingly different look of her center piece.

  1. I like how you set the fire agates. They are quite unusual and seem like they would go with a lot of different colors.

    • Alison, I’m thrilled that you love it. It came out so great. Those earthy colors just grab me and it looks amazing on Cynthia.
