Having a Tangled Chain is Like Having No Chain at All

Tangled chains can live for years in your jewelry box. You reach for that chain and it’s irrevocably joined at the hip to your pearl and chain necklace. You say, “grrr, I need to handle that!” And the years go by.

I’m not only going to tell you how to untangle your chains, But I’ll show you how in a video I just made for you. You’ll not only get to  wear them, but I’ll tell you how to travel with your chains with no more tangles!

Eleven Steps to Untangling Your Chains

  1. Grab two push pins.
  2. Find a surface you don’t mind scratching.
  3. Spread out the tangled mess as much as you can to see what you have to work with.
  4. Undue any closed clasps.
  5. Take your first push pin and stick it randomly in the biggest knot area.
  6. Place the Push Pin Into the Tangle's Center

Take your second push pin and find a chain section on the outside of the knotted area and try teasing a bit of looseness from that section.

  7. If you get no play from that section of chain, try another.
  8. Once the chain starts separating from the mass, create a more loose area. If you don’t get a chain end

untangling, just loosen as much as you can.

  9. Move that second push pin to other areas repeating the loosening technique until there are a lot of areas of looseness.
  10. At some point the chain end will get pulled out of the mess. That’s a biggie.
  11. Keep at it and it should yield to your gentle untangling.

  1. Great tip on keeping chains clasped when storing. Never thought to do that. Your video on storing chains while traveling is very helpful!
I love having a private jeweler. Happy Thanksgiving Calla!

I’m so glad you liked the blog and video. I’ve told people about this so many times it just seemed time to share it more broadly.

  2. Thanks Calla. Yes, travel can really do a number on necklaces. As a matter of fact, I stopped traveling with them because of the hassle factor. I need to get bunch of those zip bags – so handy! Do you sell them 🙂

    • Hi Cindy,
I do sell them. I used to just use them for vitamins and then had that aha moment and I’ve traveled with multiple chains successfully ever since!
Your chains and necklaces frame your face and people tend to take a lot more photos on vacation, so you need to have your pretty necklaces and chains with you!

  3. Calla I would have never thought to use push pins to help untangle chains- brilliant! Much too frequently do I have to sit there and deal with my necklaces in a mess- and having nails doesn’t make it any easier. I’m also so grateful that you shared how to travel safely and without tangling your necklaces. I could never figure it out before, so looks like I need to get myself some zip bags.

    Thank you, Calla!

  5. Excellent tips for traveling with chains, and great step by step process on how to untangle chains. That’s probably one of the most frustrating things about necklaces, when the chains get all tangled together. I’m sure I’m not the only one that’s just given up and tossed a few chains out over the years. Thanks for changing the fate of my future tangled chains (and giving some great advice on avoiding the tangles all togher..)

    • Hi Renee,
Ooh, just the best comment ever!!! Untangling gold chains really sets free the selection you have for your pendants. With the cost of gold chains, one two or three chain tangle when untangled could free up $500.00 or more worth of chains!
I’m so happy the future of your chains is bright!

  7. Hello! I would just like to say that this post has saved my life. Seriously!
I was so worried that the gold necklace my aunt recently gave me was going to be tangled forever. The chain is so fine and the individual links were so tiny I couldn’t see much. I really thought it was doomed. But thanks to your post, I was able to untangle it in less than a minute. Thank you so much!

    • Hi Kyla,
I’m so happy that my post helped with your grandmother’s chain. That is so cool. I hope you’re wearing it and thinking happy thoughts about your sweet Aunt.
