Seriously? Diamond Mining in America?

Did you know that the world’s eighth largest diamond bearing deposit on earth is in America? Neither did I.

I figured it was some big corporate secret. Nope, it’s Crater of Diamonds State Park in Murfreesboro, Arkansas.

Here’s the Vacation Part

You can bring your family to the park and search for diamonds and keep what you find. Seriously. For a diamond loving girl like me all I can say is, we would so have gone there for vacay when I was a kid!

If I had known about this awesome park, I would have written Santa a long letter about how badly I wanted to go. It’s officially on this Santa Barbara Jeweler’s wish list now!

Are People Finding Diamonds Currently, You Ask?

According to the Inquirer, “More than 500 diamonds were found at the park last year, and, it was a record year for large diamonds, according to Park Superintendent Justin Dorsey.”

“We registered 30 diamonds over one carat,” he said, adding that two of them – the 8.66-carat “Illusion Diamond” (third) and the 6.67-carat “Teamwork Diamond” (ninth) – are among the 10 top diamond finds at the park in the last 40 years.”

    • Hi Sue,
It was fun writing that and dreaming of going there. Mayhap I’ll find another jewelry lover’s vacation spot and share it as well!

  2. I did NOT know that the 8th largest diamond deposit is in Arkansas. Sounds like a fun thing to do. I know a couple of people who go to different mines for different stones on their vacations. I bet it’s hard work.

  3. How did a diamond loving gal like myself not know about this place?
Thanks for the vacay planning for diamond lovers with kids!

  4. Stopped by the Diamond Crater National Park in Murfreesboro to go “mining” for diamonds today.
Here’s a brief review so here goes.
Having been in the jewelry industry for my entire adult life, I have seen a rough diamond or two. With current trends among my fellow millennials, I have seen hundreds, and you probably have also.
You know where you can go if you don’t want to see a rough diamond?
    The Diamond Crater National Park.
Don’t get me wrong. Sweating over a dinky screen in Arkansas is actually a lot more fun than it sounds, and the surrounding forest is gorgeous.
The air conditioned gift shop is pretty great as well. My new friend Glynda taught me all about Arkansas’ famous chocolate gravy, and sold me a mug to commemorate my hours laboring towards nothing.
The take away for us salespeople? Diamonds are rare. You can go right into their homeland with shovels and buckets and spend hours and still not find one.
As my girlfriend concluded at the end of the day “it’s way easier to just get them from you.”

    • Hi Jake,
Too bad you didn’t find diamonds, but it sounds like it was beautiful and a wonderful adventure for you. Thank you so much for sharing your visit to Diamond Crater National Park!
