Jewelry Definition – Sleeper Earrings
There is an earring I call a “sleeper” earring because you can sleep in it. It’s a lightweight small hoop.
Its post hinges and snaps closed in a “v” lock. In other words you don’t need a backing on it.
Other hoops may close like this, but what makes a sleeper earring, is its lightweight construction and its small size.

Interesting, Calla! Although you explained the closing mechanism on this type of earring, are there any disadvantages to wearing earrings without formal backings? Do these fall off more easily?
Alexandra, That is an excellent question. When you do not have formal backings and use this type of snap down closure you run the risk of losing the earring should the locking part become too loose. I recommend listening to the soft “snick” sound as the post locks into the closure. You can adjust these at home if they become loose. What I love about sleeper hoops is how many people with earring troubles start having no troubles with earrings when they wear these.
