Filigree is a delicate, intricate, and lace-like artistic design element used in gold, platinum and silver jewelry.
Filigree creates openness and lightness in pieces.
In the filigree basket head, also called a filigree head, the prongs are supported by more intricate wirework than that of a plain basket head.

It was popular as well in Italian and French metalwork from 1660 to the late 19th century. It should not be confused with ajoure jewelry work, the ajoure technique consisting of drilling holes in objects made of sheet metal.
