Dear Calla – Picky Princess Who Won’t Settle

Dear Calla GoldDear Calla,

I was in the Southwest on a vacation and we bought an odd shaped turquoise piece. I feel like it needs to be re-cut in order to get it into a mounting. But I don’t want to just cut it down until it randomly fits into some setting. I’d like to preserve more of it, but have symmetry.

A girlfriend of mine says it was one of those regrettable impulse buys and to just buy a turquoise pendant and call it my vacay memory pendant.

I want THAT piece of turquoise. And I want to set it in a pendant in a special way. Am I being too much of a picky princess?

~ Turquoise Princess

Dear Princess,

If you are just being picky then so is half the population. We like what we like. Why do we work overtime? So we can earn money and buy stuff that is made by the thousands in China and congratulate ourselves on how unique we are? Uh no.

Something in the color, the matrix or the vibe of that piece of turquoise called to you. You should definitely have it re-cut so you can have that pendant made. Then have the setting custom made to accommodate your re-cut gemstone.

I’ve put a picture of a client’s gold in quartz piece she bought on a trip that we re-cut and custom designed to inspire you. She likes what she likes and she’s not a princess. Neither are you except in a good way. An artistic hearted princess. Go for it.
