How to Use Pinterest to Design Your Engagement Ring

By Calla Gold

pinterest-logoPinterest is a Great Way to Do Some Engagement Ring Design Homework

What if your boyfriend is thinking of proposing and wants to surprise you? How is he supposed to know what you want? Well in the past he might have asked your mom or your best friend. But what if their personal taste isn’t yours?

Pinterest to the Rescue

Now you can show him the details you love without having to be ridiculously direct about it. In this post I’ll show you how to use Pinterest to focus in on the design details you love for your dream ring.

If You’re New to Pinterest

Pinterest allows you to have an online scrapbook of pictures you find online. And pictures your have all over the place on your computer. Imagine having your engagement ring possibility pictures all in one place.

In your Pinterest online scrapbook you can have different boards like “cute cat pictures” or “places I’d like to go.” But for the purposes of this post you’ll want to make you “My Dream Ring” board.

Create your board just for engagement and wedding ring ideas. Easy intro to Pinterest.

Going Into Helpful Detail with Your Pins

Pinterest Pin

Notice the Specific Interests Noted in the Comment Box. Noting Your Specific Likes Makes This Pin Much More Helpful to the Jewelry Design Process

Each picture you post has a place where you can write captions about them, like “I love this style of hand engraving” or “this is how I like my diamonds set, in the little side prongs” or “This is the shape of center diamond I love the most.”

You can pin pictures you find online or pin pictures from your computer photo files.

Having these engagement and wedding ring pictures that grab you all in one place with captions that describe what design element you like from each one, is a big step in the direction of having a unique engagement and wedding ring.

Pinning with Help From Other Pinners

Pinterest search box

Go to the Search Box in the Upper Left Corner and Dive into all the Cool Pictures of “Engagement Rings”

It is very easy to find engagement and wedding rings on Pinterest. Just go to the search window in the upper left hand corner and type in “engagement rings.”

Once there search for details you love. Each time you re-pin a design be sure to write a caption describing what you like about it.

Remember, your boyfriend will need details. So will his jeweler!

Pinning From Online

Your pin button from Pinterest won’t always successfully pin a picture. Plenty of sites block direct pinning. But plenty of blogs and sites enable easy pinning. That is one of the reasons I suggest pinning from Pinterest. It’s just so easy!

Check Out My Pinterest Page!

Please go to my Pinterest page on wedding rings and re-pin from there. Also check out how on some of my captions I mention particular details I like on the ring pinned.

Share Your Homework on Pinterest

How to Share a Pinterest Board with someone

Just Click the “Send Board” Button and Fill in the Email Address and You Can Share Your Board

You can share a particular board with someone even if they are not signed up with Pinterest.

I recommend sharing your Pinterest board with your boyfriend, girlfriend and mom.

One Last Detail

Oh yeah, and make sure your boyfriend, mom and bestie knows your wedding finger size. All the homework in the world won’t help you be surprised if he can’t figure out your finger size. And for the record it won’t help if he borrows that ring you always wear on your right ring finger. Your left and right ring fingers will be different sizes.

May your Pinterest pinning lead to a more wonderful ring that reflects your taste and your love.

Pintastically Yours

Hi Michelle,
You are so right. I focused on using Pinterest to design an engagement ring, but really you could use it to redesign your bathroom or design a wedding invitation or any number of things.
I like how Pinterest lets you put your favorite things in one place!
Thanks for weighing in.

Calla

Dear Calla,
I love all the ideas about Pinterest. Using Pinterest to design a ring or a pendant even is a use I had not considered for Pinterest. Since I started using Pinterest I have used it to plan vacations. For designing jewelry however it will be genius!
How many of your client’s have used Pinterest in their design process with you?

Dear Curious Dr. Valerie,
What started me doing this was a client who said can you show me some ideas so I’ll have a starting place. This was before we met for our design appointment. I created this board for her:

It was really helpful and short cutted that indecisive place where you don’t know where to start.
Since that time I’ve had three brides to be come to me with their laptop and page of engagement ring ideas. I find as a jeweler that seeing the taste of these wonderful young women in the details they select helps me greatly in crafting a unique design for them.
Thanks for asking Dr. Valerie!

I’m a huge fan of Pinterest. One of my friends completely designed her ring with Pinterest. It was like you said, she found the three diamond arrangement and setting style on one ring, the side details on another and the engraving design on another.
I make it sound so simple, she pinned like 50 rings, but it made it easy for her to get what she really wanted which no one makes. Her ring is amazing.

Dear Tracey Bee,
Thank you for sharing your friend’s story, she is one smart cookie. And I bet her ring is awesome!
