Finger Mate Hinging Shank for Rings for Enlarged Knuckles

By Calla Gold

The Ring on enlarged knuckles looks great

Carroll’s ring fits snugly behind her  enlarged knuckles.

“I Love Jewelry But My Rings Just Spin Around”

Have you ever said this?

“I Loved My Wedding Ring, but it Just Wasn’t Comfortable Anymore!”

This Santa Barbara Jeweler heard this from her Mom many years ago when she asked her why she wasn’t wearing her beautiful wedding ring.

She showed me a couple tiny white scars where her diamond settings had cut her skin while she was driving and the sideways ring dug into her pinky finger. Ouch.

Rings That Cause Pain

She got it out and showed me how it couldn’t stay upright because her knuckles were way bigger than her finger at the palm. My mom is a happily married woman and a beautiful one too. It was awful that she couldn’t wear her ring. Something had to be done!

Then I Found the Finger Mate Corporation

Their smooth closing ring shanks that hinge open to go over the knuckle were exactly what my Mom would love. I showed her the brochure and said, “Let’s do this.”  So we did and she wears her ring to this day.

Happily Finger Mating Around  the World

Since then, maybe not around the world, but a lot around here, I have been working with larger knuckled women and loving it as their hands are once again happily and comfortably adorned with beauty and symbols of love.

Whether you have enlarged knuckles, arthritis in the knuckles, or they are big from cracking your knuckles in your youth, or sports injuries, they present a problem with wearing your rings comfortably.

Carroll’s Ring

Wedding Ring with a Fingermate Hinging Shank

This wide shanked diamond ring can have a Finger Mate Shank

Years ago my client Carroll had me put on a wider, more comfortable shank to make her diamond ring fit her better. That worked well till her knuckles grew larger.

Years later it was spinning as her knuckles got larger. So we had a Finger Mate Hinging Shank put on.

This was the widest shank I’d ever used with the Finger Mate Hinge and I wanted to share with you the flexibility that is available. It’s not a one size fits all deal. There is plenty of flexibility available.

Now this beautiful diamond ring can be worn comfortably

I asked Lana, another client, if she had any jewelry she wasn’t wearing. It didn’t have to be broken, just not worn or infrequently worn. Out came this gorgeous filigree and diamond ring.

Her knuckles were enlarged just enough to make it uncomfortably loose once it was over her knuckle. That was enough to keep her from wearing it.

We put on a nice thin Finger Mate Hinged Shank to go with the delicacy of her ring design. Lana was jazzed and wears it a lot now.

What’s the Takeaway Message Here?

If you have a ring you love that just isn’t comfortable there may be a solution to that problem.

If you have larger knuckles that is not a reason not to wear your rings. Your rings make your hands look prettier. They are your rings, like little smiles on your hand. Wear them!

Wear it Don’t Warehouse it!

  4. I recently had joint replacement on my wedding ring finger and the Dr. Destroyed my finger. I have been so upset that after 36 years I can’t wear my wedding rings anymore. I am so excited to see this . What is the average cost? I live in The phila/south jersey area.is there a jeweler near me or could I ship to you?

    • Dear Cathy,
The heartbreaking reasons people’s joints aren’t normal could fill a book. I am so pleased that you found my article on enlarged knuckles and hinging shanks. Your wedding ring is such an important piece of jewelry and symbol to the world that you are married. I’d be delighted if I could help you.
I’ll do an email follow up with you. I’m not familiar with jewelers in your area that handle these types of solutions.
Nothing would make me happier than having you wearing your wedding rings again!
      Your Personal Jeweler,
      Calla

  5. Dear Calla Jewelry:
Would it be possible to give me a ball-park estimate for the hinge ring shank? I’d like to know if I would be able to afford it before I even think that I could ever wear my ring again.
    thank you
    Joyce Grant

    • Hello Joyce,
The FingerMate hinging shank in 14kt yellow gold in a 4 millimeter wide shank installed could be around $900.00 to $1100.00. Sometimes we need to install a bridge for strength under the top part of your ring. The hinge mechanism needs a good amount of support to work properly. I just want you to know each ring is different and needs different attention and has different costs.
Did you read about speed bumps and the butterfly spring? They are less expensive ways to possibly help, but only if your knuckle isn’t too large.
      Thanks for writing.
      Your Personal Jeweler,
      Calla Gold

  6. Dear Calla Gold,
I was wondering if there are any jewellers in Canada that could do this kind of hinged ring? Do you have a ballpark price for a 10 karat gold ring? Thank you.
    Carol Paul

  7. Hi Calla

Can you tell me if their are any jewelers in the cape cod, ma area that do this work? Thanks so much.

    • Hello Roz,
Here are two jewelers in your Cape Cod, MA area who do the Fingermate hinging shank work:
      CHATHAM JEWELERS, INC.
      532 MAIN STREET
      CHATHAM, MA 02633 508-945-0690

      DOLE & DOWD, LTD.
      18 WASHINGTON STREET
      DUXBURY, MA 02332 781-934-6751

Hopefully one of them will suit you perfectly. Enjoy your excellent fitting ring when your Fingermate work is done. Let me know how it goes!
      Your Personal Jeweler,
      Calla

  8. Are there any good jewelers in Vermont or New Hampshire? I would love to wear my rings again.

  9. Hello, My right ring finger has a very large knuckle that I can not get any rings over, not even a size 10. I am so frustrated and embarrassed over this. I am not sure if the reshanking process would be an answer for me, but would like to know if there is a way to enlarge a ring with the Fingermate Shank? The picture above of the ring shank in open position looks to be exactly what I need. Can you give me any information about this process and if there are any options to have this done around Monterey, Calif.?
    Thank you very much.

    • Hi Sandra,
It is very frustrating when our beloved rings are not fitting or are spinning around annoyingly.
I do not know of jewelers other than myself who do this. Would you like to give me a call? I could answer your questions about the Fingermate ring shank option. Some people have come in from out of town after we’ve spoken on the phone and brought rings. Also check out my video on this blog about establishing your knuckle to finger differential which tells me if you are a candidate for this type of shank:

  10. Hi please advise if there are any retailers in the Philadelphia Pa / Delaware / New Jersey region. My engagement ring is a 3 stone ring made of Palladium. I’ve been told by another company offering hinge solutions that it would need to be entirely reset in Platinum.

    • Hello Ashley,
The odd thing about the advice you were just given is that because of the malleable nature of platinum as a metal it is not used in Finger Mate hinging shanks. They’d attach a white gold hinging shank to a platinum ring.
I would contact the Finger Mate corporation directly for a referral to a jeweler in your area. I do not know a jeweler in your neck of the woods.
      Your Personal Jeweler,
      Calla

  11. Hello-
I have developed what I think is a form of arthritis, and can no longer wear my wedding ring- actually had to have it cut off. So sad. My knuckle is too large for the ring to pass over, and I’m wondering if there’s anyone in the area (Grand Forks, ND) that does hinges, etc., other than the jewelry store where we bought the ring. They want $3,000.00! Thank you.

    • Hello Angela,
I do not know of any jewelers in your area. You may need to work with a distance jeweler to get this done in a less costly way. Check out my blog post on figuring out your knuckle to finger differential:
      http://www.callagold.com/all-about-rings/knuckle-to-finger-differential/
Once you have established your knuckle vs finger size that opens the door to knowing the Fingermate size you’d probably need. It’d be good to double check it with a fingermate sizer, (I have these) to be sure you are getting the correct size.
Once you have the correct size you do not need a local jeweler to do this work, you just need a jeweler familiar with the Fingermate hinging shank solution.
      I am hoping this helps.
      Your Personal Jeweler,
      Calla
